Why SmartGO?
Today, transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. Cars and light trucks account for over half of that problem. Yet millions of Americans lack affordable, sustainable alternatives—and remain dependent on privately owned vehicles as their only mobility option.
We believe there’s a better way. Just as AAA championed highways and helped shape the car-centric culture of the 20th century, SmartGO is advancing the digital infrastructure for a car-optional 21st century. Through membership in our network, users can actively participate in building a future where mobility is more flexible, affordable and sustainable.
What We Do
SmartGO is a nonprofit (501(c)(3)) working to advance car-optional communities and healthier, more sustainable travel choices. We partner with insurers, employers, governments, individuals and households to support lower-emission lifestyles—whether through walking, biking, public transit, shared vehicles or simply driving less.
The SmartGO Mobility Ecosystem is built on a simple, transformative idea: More sustainable travel options are a benefit not just to you, your health and your finances, but to everyone because such options decrease congestion and pollution. By securely collecting and analyzing day-to-day mobility data—like miles driven, avoided or traveled via low-impact modes—SmartGO rewards individual users with tangible benefits. It’s also able to glean insights from anonymized data gathered from across the network to shape smarter public policies, better pricing strategies and more inclusive community planning.
Elements of the SmartGO Mobility Ecosystem
SmartGO aligns the interests of government, business, and consumers to support smarter travel behavior and better access to mobility options. Here are some current and proposed elements of the ecosytem:
Pay-Per-Mile Auto Insurance. This distance-based model ties premiums to how much people actually drive. It’s fairer for low-mileage drivers, who often save money and reduce driving by 5–15%—cutting emissions and accident risk along the way.
Non-Owner Auto Insurance. This affordable coverage supports people who don’t own a car but occasionally rent or borrow one. Some plans also include protections for walking, biking or using transit—providing greater peace of mind for people using such modes.
SmartGO Mobility Credits. Members earn credits when they choose sustainable travel modes like walking, biking, transit or carpooling. These credits can be redeemed for real-world value—transit passes, bikeshare memberships or to help offset the cost of other transportation modes.
As mobility continues to evolve—with self-driving technology, more diverse travel options, and changing views on car ownership—auto insurance is adapting too. The SmartGO Mobility Ecosystem offers insurers a practical way to keep pace by aligning coverage with how people actually travel today. It may also help to improve risk assessment. For SmartGO network members, it means more flexible coverage, potential savings and a better fit for their lifestyle.
